[BPFK] EGF ; Epidermal Growth Factors, is a censored ingredient In Malaysia?

EGF stands for Epidermal growth factor, which is a single-chain, non-glycosylated protein that naturally occurs in our skin cells. Its main purpose is to heal our skin by promoting DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. Growth factors are one of the most controversial cosmetic ingredients in terms of safety.

What are the skin benefits of EGF?
EGF has many benefits for your skin, including wrinkle improvement, hydration, and pigmentation prevention. Because EGF repairs skin by stimulating the growth of new skin cells, it also enhances skin barrier. This allows the skin to hold on to moisture better, so your skin becomes smoother and softer.

But why did the EGF become a censored ingredient  as an ingredient of skincare products?

1) Because they are large molecular weight proteins, so it cannot penetrate the stratum corneum. Thus, their ability to contact the viable epidermis and dermis to impact living cells is limited.

2) Recently, there was a legal challenge to a company that included spent culture media containing growth factors in its skin care products.  A suit was brought stating that the growth factors were responsible for the induction of skin cancers
