[SKIN TRUTH] Do men need to use male-specific cosmetics?

In a 2014 survey, men in their 20s and 30s said they used an average of 7.7 different skincare and cosmetic products a day. Why was men’s skincare invented and how are male-specific skincare and cosmetic products different from those used by women?

In general, men do tend to have skincare concerns that are a bit different from those of women. Because of the effects of male hormones, men tend to have wider pores, as well as higher levels of sebum and sweat and lower skin water content. In addition, men tend to have skin layers that are comparatively thicker, which leads to higher amounts of dead skin cells on the skin. Constant shaving also makes it easier for scarring to occur on the skin surface. (It is worth noting, however, that there are individual differences in skin type and lifestyle habits.)

Because of these differences, male-specific cosmetic and skincare products on the market are generally more stimulating than female-targeted products. The alcohol content in these products is usually high to address post-shaving disinfection and pore reduction.

So should men exclusively use male-specific cosmetic and skincare products? For men with healthy skin, it’s perfectly fine to use male-specific products if they want to. However, because all individuals have varying skin types and needs, some men might have a drier skin type, or oily skin, or more sensitive skin. For men with unhealthy skin, using male-specific products can be stimulating to the skin because of ingredients like menthol or alcohol.

Many male consumers don’t know much about skincare or cosmetics, so they are often the ones with the most questions and the ones with the most surprised reactions when they notice positive changes in their skin. In particular, they’re often shocked to experience positive responses to skincare products that do not specifically target men.

The process for choosing skincare and cosmetic products is the same for every individual regardless of gender. All individuals need to understand their own skin type and select products that contain the ingredients that pertain to their particular needs. Instead of insisting solely on male-specific products, men need to make informed, conscious decisions based on their skin conditions.
